The Screenwriter’s Genre Mapping
Workshop Series

This series of workshops is intended for screenwriters and writers in all mediums in order to give them a solid backing in the common and most necessary story, structure and character elements in different genres.

Attendees of the workshops are asked to watch a set of films before the meeting so that the group can discuss what common elements made the films successful. After the workshop, writers are encouraged to write a script in the genre that was analyzed.

Our facilitator for the comedy workshop will be Chuck Hughes, screenwriter of Ed and His Dead Mother, president of the Iowa Scriptwriters Alliance, and board member of the Iowa Motion Picture Association.

The workshop will be held at the Des Moines Central Public Library, 1000 Grand Avenue, on March 3, 2007, from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm and is free of charge.

Attendees are encouraged to attend the group lunch held across from the library at the downtown restaurant Beggars Banquet, where they can enjoy a specially arranged lunch discussion with Chuck Hughes to learn more about the his experiences in having his scripts produced. Lunch cost is $10 and includes meal, drink and gratuity.

We will watch one other film as a group in order to facilitate discussion.

Attendance is free, but registration is requested so we can get an accurate expectation of attendees.
As an added bonus to newer screenwriters, the first hour of the seminar will be a discussion of basic screenwriting structure, style, story and terminology facilitated by IDFG founder and IMPA/ISA member Bruce Heppner-Elgin.
